Why In-House Recruiting Works
Recruiting is a team effort. At DecisionOne Dental Partners, we always start by asking our team members that already understand our values and are happy in their jobs to send over their family and friends. Good team members usually know people who have the same values and work ethic. They know what we are looking for in a great employee.
Having the recruiting in-house means that there is an understanding of the roles and expectations of DecisionOne. Since each office is a little bit different, the focus can be put on what each office is looking for in a candidate and hopefully the best candidates can be discovered in all resumes that come in.
Finding the right candidate can be difficult, as there are often many variables in the dental field. Offices may require some positions to have experience. Dental assisting is one of those positions; you can teach someone how to work with the doctor, however training them about procedures and instruments requires many hours of production time that isn’t always available. Working as a business assistant is something that can be trained, however they must have great customer service qualities as well as a great attitude and dedication to learning the position. For hygienists it is required to have a license which is achieved through additional schooling, yet you would be surprised as to how many resumes come in where their last job was a meat packer and they don’t have anything beyond an high school education. While it makes me laugh looking over some of what gets sent over, it makes it that much more difficult to find the perfect candidate for our offices.
Even when you find the perfect person on paper, they still have to have the qualities of the office they would be working in. Sometimes a candidate may not be a fit for that particular office but would be a great asset for D1 in another office. Unfortunately this I have to reject many applications and I may not be the most popular person at the end of the day, but I know it’s the right decision not only for our offices but for that person. We would not want to put them in a role that isn’t a good fit for them.
There are times when recruiting gets tough, but luckily it’s part of a larger department of support. Recruiting works very close with human resources in regards to the hiring process and reporting. While each office is unique, at the end of the day you are hiring for one company verses multiple companies. It’s you and the company, building a future together. You get to work as a team to achieve their goals.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned in the past year in this role, it’s that in-house recruitment is actually hard work. Who knew!? But the end result is very rewarding to myself and the offices I get to help out every day. If you're interested in learning more about DecisionOne Dental, I'm interested in speaking with you!
